About

The lakes Melissa Sallie Improvement Association was started in 1936. As a non profit organization, we exist to safeguard our shoreline, water front, and the recreational advantages of Lakes Melissa and Sallie. In the past we have become involved in algae issues, development and zoning issues, and we were instrumental in securing National Preservation Route status for County 22. We work closely with the Minnesota DNR and the Pelican Watershed to stay abreast of current projects and concerns.

The Association hosts an annual meeting in June of every year. It covers a summary of organization activities, new business, election of officers and often, a guest speaker. Since time is always short at the lake, we keep the agenda moving and try to keep the meeting to 90 minutes. Coffee and doughnuts are provided in the beginning so it is a great way to see your lake neighbors at the start of the season. We encourage you to attend!

In addition to our annual meeting, the Association sends out a winter newsletter and other mailings as necessary to keep the membership informed. This web site is another avenue of communication along with a membership directory which we publish every other year. In June we will be opening an Association office in Shoreham for the first time. While hours will be limited, we want to be more visible and hope you stop by.

Since 2004 the Association has undertaken some special projects. These include our annual Home Tour and also publication of Shoreham: Life at the Lakes. Both projects have contributed greatly to our sense of community and have raised funds to help us operate. In addition, the LMSA Foundation was started in 2006. Its purpose is to help preserve our wonderful lake area for future generations. These projects seem to be just the beginning of many great undertakings and we look forward to more of your suggestions.

Last year our all volunteer organization grew to over 425 members. We hope you are enjoying your membership or plan to join if you have not in the past. A complete list of benefits and a dues form follows. Membership form and dues can be mailed to PO Box 1003, Detroit Lakes, MN 56502.
